Where would be a suitable area to buy land to build a log home?

Our dream is to build a log home but we know that there will be objections from planners, are different parts of the country more accepting of this type of home and if so where would be a good place to start looking for land.

We never done this type of thing before and not really sure where to start.

You could always buy a tumbledown old wreck of a place, pull it down and build on the land. You might get something more rural then.

Oh Ratter, It is our dream too. I think it would be wonderful. So warm and cosy and they blend so well with the countryside. I adore wood. A remote log home someone would be wonderful and I would love to stay in Norfolk. There are quite a few around here. You have set me thinking.....................................

Douglas, the last time that I visited Caithness was 44 years ago so I expect things have moved on a bit. Just had a look at Tongue on street view it hasn't changed a bit.

You really need to find a rough area where you would be happy with, then investigate the planning policies for eco-type new builds in countryside in those areas.

I love the sound of Wales! We want somewhere not more than 10 miles from a town or larger village. Ideally a piece of land that would be around 1/4 - 1 acre. I just read about a couple who had found a lovely piece of land but were having trouble getting planning permission to build a house on it. So they had a mobile log home built by a Finnish company and when the planning finally went through for the "proper" home nearly three years later, they were able to use the mobile home to create their permanent home. The mobile was designed for this future purpose and it saved them so much money! Great idea!

Ok, so we are focusing more on North Wales but still not ruling out other areas and we are now looking at buying 3 or 4 acres.

What are the North Welsh like with new incomers in the area, one being Irish and myself being English but half Welsh.

Generally speaking, how is the climate, snow fall etc compared to the South west of England? colder obviously.

We would love to be in the vicinity of Snowdonia National park :)
