Extension on Semi-detached house

We are buying a semi-detached house, but need to put an extension on the back to make the kitchen bigger, do i have to get permission from the attached neighbour or just ask them in a polite way that this what we intend to do?

When you apply for planning permission, it will be up to the planners to decide (a) whether the neighbour should have any say about it, and (b) if so, to tell the neighbour about the application; and finally of course (c) decide whether to give permission or not. Whoever is going to draw up the plans for you ought to have a good idea, based on his previous experience, of whether (a) applies, and whether any objection from the neighbour is likely to be treated seriously by the planners or just ignored.

So yes, if you wish to be polite, tell the neighbour that they may - just may - hear from the planning authority, but if not, it will be because the planners have decided that your plan is not going to bother your neighbour. Of course they can still try to object to it, that's democracy, but at least you'll have done everything necessary.

Yes, the first thing to do is tell the neighbours what you intend......... out of courtesy if nothing else.
