Who is responsible for interior decoration, the landlord or the tenant?

I think it will depend on your rental agreement, I have lived in rented for 35 years and in my case it is down to me.

Thanks, I can't see anything in the Rental Agreement but I have decorated a few rooms since I have lived here and my landlord knows but has never offered to pay so I guess it is up to me.

I've never heard of a council or housing association taking responsibility for the interior decoration of their rented properties (other than 'between tenants') so I would assume that leaving it up to tenants is very much the norm with rented properties.

Also Pips, in my view better for you to have control, rather than a landlord telling you not to change décor etc

In council properties any interior decoration is down to the tenant. Not sure about private rented properties.

Thanks all, to be fair I have always been happy to do my own thing and pay, never gave it much thought until people started asking me why I was paying for it. I too have always been under the impression that the outside is up to the owners and the inside up to the tenant.

I was also thinking the same pips - the inside, up to the the tenant and the outside, up to the the landlord.

when we rented many years ago we were not allowed to paper only paint the walls .

Lease should say "property be returned as found" with supporting evidence.

I've always decorated my rented properties, but I've always checked with the various landlords and told them what I'm planning to do. The landlord might redecorate in between tenants, but not otherwise.
