What Features Would You Like To See In An Old School Type Pub And What Would Draw You There Away From The Larger Corporation Theme Pubs?

I'm mulling a few ideas over and am thinking of buying a pub as many of the old school type ones have closed down due to the popularity of themed pubs leaving many folk who don't like the young, loud and characterless theme pubs.

What would draw you there and what do you miss about the old school pubs that you would happily welcome if one opened up near you?

our 'local' is just a pub.
One section has a hooooge tv screen and LL is quite happy to change the channel if the majority want to watch summat.
Another area has juke box which is loud enough but doesn't encroach on the tv viewers (have no idea ow that works btw)
Yet another wee area is quite quiet.
It's not a huge area so don't quite understand the logistics, but the pub has been there for decades and decades, so something is working nicely.

Our local has just been refurbished. All the TV screens have been taken out and it's now basically a restaurant that looks like a pub.

our 'local' used to sell rolls and sausage/bacon at lunchtime.
Was heavily preggers with the first alba and demolished 3 rolls n sausage (sshhhh)
Had to stop selling hot food when elfin safety arrived.
No, they were not contaminated, it was just the regulations.

The pub I grew up in sold Pukka pies, hotdogs and burgers. They also sold coffee and tea but I have no memory of ever turning the kettle on :-)

our local charges just under £10 for a pint of lager and a bottle of cider thats why we use " bernies bar " when we have a drink!

The difficulty with loud pop music in Pubs is that everyone can hear it, even those that don't want to. And its never just audible....its always too loud !

It might be OK for busy city centre Pubs, where lots of young people congregate, but its not really suitable for smaller, local Pubs.

My local Wetherspoons has gaming machines, but they are silent ones, and there is no pop music at all. Even the TV is on silent. Wetherspoons also used to ban smoking at the bar, even when smoking was allowed.

I can't see the point in going to a Pub, to meet friends and then have to shout at them !

That’s not true. Hygiene ratings are about food handling. Plenty of pubs that allow dogs have the highest rating.

• the condition of the structure of the buildings – the cleanliness, layout, lighting, ventilation and other facilities

At the end of the inspection, the business is given one of the six ratings from 0-5. The top rating of ‘5’ means that the business was found to have ‘very good’ hygiene standards.

Definitely no dogs and no music. I can't think of anything worse than going home from a night out covered in dog hairs.

People who take their hounds into pubs, do it for the attention they get from some of the other customers, especially if its cute, or an expensive breed.

Example: Oh, isn't he/she lovely, whats his/her name, how old, how long have you had it, whats its favorite squeaky toy etc. :-)

Whatever you lot think or say the Food hygiene assessors DO take access to food service areas by dogs into consideration when making the scores on the doors award. An establishment that allows dogs free access to all food service areas is going to get a lower rating than one that bans them, all other factors being the same.
I have both a personal license to serve alcohol and a food hygiene certificate , the dogs in food service areas question was mentioned on both courses.

a welcoming atmosphere, real ale, good food, no music unless softly played, no pool table that is a deal breaker.
