i own a property that does not have a back garden. My nieghbours have got huge trees right next to my house, and i cant get access to do repairs. There is damp coming through the walls due to no gutters, it needs pointing and also i am worried about root damage. What rights do i have?? I have been told they need to remove the trees if there isnt 1 metre of space?? i hope somebody can help me or give some information.. thanks nick

If the tree is hanging over your side, you can cut it back to the boundary at your cost and return the branches. The problem is going to arise if this is the trunk - not the branch limbs.
I know nothing of the one metre rule you refer to - urban myth I think.

Have you approached the neighbours to ask about it? What do they say? I'm afraid that if they do agree it it's removal it will be at your cost.

Do you live in a clay soil area? - removal may end up being worse if so because water the tree is currently sucking water which will remain in the ground if you kill it - causing soil heave (opposite of shrinkage).

More info to the above please.
