Ray you have exactly correct. There is no point in being registered just for the sake of it. All my work is for households not businesses. The point I made about the customer paying Vat on goods is because that is what I paid for the goods and that charge is passed on.I am not going to charge the customer for the goods less VAT, I am not a charity!! Therefore the customer will have paid Vat on the goods.
I merely answered the original question in response to Ethels first answer.
Hope this clears up the situation.

The answer to bednobs question (modifications for disabled persons) is 'possibly'. You need to read this Adobe Acrobat PDF document from HM Excise and Customs.

See in particular Section 6.3 about what conditions must be satisfied.

I am a self-employed tradesman who is not VAT registered as my annual turnover does not exceed the required threshold. I guarantee all my work and I am still bound by Trading Standards and the Sale of Goods and Services legislation.
Ethel's inference that anyone who is not VAT registered is thus a fly-by-night cowboy is entirely inaccurate and uninformed....complete drivel.

Thank you for your support and observations scirious. I notice that Ethel has not had the decency to respond to my earlier answer and reply. It is obvious that she got her response wrong to the initial question. There must be lots of trades people who are not VAT registered, and as you rightly say, offer a good service. We are not cowboys and dole seekers as Ethel implies.
Perose, sorry that your question has led to this discussion. But at least you now know that you do have some choices regarding the VAT element.
