Re weeds on shingle - try and sprinkle salt generously on the shingle. It will kill anything green. Of course not to be used near plants you want to keep, of if there is danger of a run off into plants you want to keep. Happy gardening to all the enthusiasts.
How long would the salt take to work Cailin? Having a bit of a do at Easter and I'm now on a desperate mission to tidy the garden up.
Should have thought about the salt. I spilled some on the front lawn when I was trying to grit the driveway in the winter. I now have a nice big brown patch where there was once grass.
As per Mrs.O - From Sunday 10th, Aldi has a single-headed weed-burner for £12.99 (it's not yet on their website- they are rather slow to get their stuff on).
You don't need a triple-headed gun. Go for the Aldi one. These are normally around £22 to £25 in garden centres. N.B. Plumbers usually rush to Aldi to get the gas, since it's usually quite a bit cheaper than elsewhere. Go early!!
I'm sure it would be lovely but I suspect overkill.
I'm unsure if all you are frying is the tops, how well that kills the whole plant though. Satisfying though it may be, I think I'd try for a chemical weed kill first.
As a head gardener who's tried everything from flame throwers to salt, The only way to deal with weeds in paths is to regulary use a glyphosate based weed killer. In my experience, flame throwers are useless on all but newly emerged annual weeds.
