Suggestions for planting needed

I have a raised terrace at the back of my garden of about 30 square meteres.

It is overlooked by 3 large trees and is in the shade for nearly all of the day, except around 2 -4 pm when the sun comes round and gets in through some gaps in the foliage.

At the moment its home to a lot of weeds and all sorts of brambles etc.

Any suggestions as to what I could plant that might thrive in the shade, something with some colour and is reasonably low maintenance would be preferable

How about a Japanese Maple some of them don't mind a bit of shade

I was just thinking the same thing as I was reading the question. Fatsia (caster oil plant) don't mind a bit of shade, not much in the colour department but the leaves will be a good contrast against most other plants.

Excellent, thanks, am off to the garden centre with a shopping list.

Have dug up and removed nearly all the weeds and brambles from the roots, turned soil over and mixed in loads of compost that was lying around in garage, and its now waiting on its new guests.

You might want to consider planting some bulbs for spring colour. Bluebells, lily of the valley, snowdrops, anemones. Any native woodland plants would do well in such conditions.

Thats agood idea for the front of the terrace, still got plenty of space to plop some bulbs in.
already have some of those so in other parts of the garden so can dig some out and replant
