hi my husband swears he's heard something recently about stamp duty thresholds being changed. We are looking to move and have seen a house for £270000 (above the 2nd stamp duty threshold) Is he right that things might change?

The only change is this year's budget (apart from tat relating to bulk purchases of properties) is a review of 'First-time buyer relief'. That was introduced in last year's budget with a threshold of £250,000; the results of a review are due for publication in the autumn.

There are no other changes to SDLT thresholds, so only first-time buyers might be affected by any change which will come from the ongoing review.

thanks for your answer chris. I am wondering if they are expecting to be knocked down to £249 999, or if they really are expecting somone to pay so much more SD even though it's just above (not that i expect you to know what's in their minds!)

It's always worth trying an offer first even if you end up at the full asking price. I'd suggest 10% below asking price but I don't know your area so perhaps it's different where you are?
