pegs and pegging

Sorry postie but this has been bugging me for years.  Why is it so popular to peg out washing, even on cold days?  I keep trying to be a super housewife but the washing usually gets rained on when I'm at work and it is so crispy I can barely get the iron thru.

If I tumble my clothes they are soft, smell lovely and are done in a few moments.  I also don't need to iron anything. Does anyone agree as I seem to be the only one on the close not pegging, let alone colour-coordinating pegs!

Hi sunflower - I am just as fussy as you!

I always tumble dry the washing throughout the winter/spring months - hardly any ironing at all.

If I hang the washing out in summer time, I still bring it in & tumble to soften it up, as I can't stand scratchy clothes, towels & bedding! :o}

Don't try and be a super housewife sunflower, as you can bet your life there will always be someone who is even more super than you. I gave up that idea many years ago - and my family think I'm wonderful. Little do they know the number of tricks I've learned along the way......there's more to life than housework.

My washing is out in all weathers simply because it gets it out the house, I have a long garden - and I don't have any room for a tumbledryer. Don't bother about the rest of the herd (or close!) just do what's right for you.

Some of us can't afford the luxury of a tumble dryer.  Or have any room for one even if we could!
Thank you God for tumble driers!!!
The clothes DO smell nice and fesh when they've been out on the line on a spring day.
I gave up trying to be the perfect housewife virtually as soon as I started - life is far too short.
There's something to be said for places where you are not allowed to hang out washing outside certain hours - as my friend in the US can't.
P.S. Colour co-ordinated pegs ? ! ? ! ? !
I know I am going to be boring with this answer but if everyone hung out 1 wash a week instead of tumble-drying it, it would help the environment.   See, I told you I would be boring.
This sounds even sadder, but I love hanging the washing out and watching it blowing in the wind! It always smells lovely when you bring it in.

Silly Moo I agree life's just too short if you don't actually enjoy doing it.Can your friend speak to my neighbour who hands his skiddies up RIGHT IN MY VIEW I'm sure of it. By the way, read the previous posted question on the peg colours.

*hangs
Yes I love hanging the washing out in the fresh air and watching it blowing in the wind(sounds like a song title) but I also tumble the load for a few minutes to get the softness - and I live in Spain but still tumble for a few mins even in sweltering August.
I also like to see a line full of washing blowing in the wind too & yes it does smell nice. I still have to tumble it for a short while after though to soften it up!
I am really pleased that I am not the only saddo on this planet.  I thought I was the only person who colour-coordinated her pegs.  I felt really guilty about it but couldn't stop. By the letters, it sounds like there is a bit of a peg club.
and not only do I colour-coordinate pegs I also have to hang the washing in correct order ie hubby's boxers, my gripper knickers, daughters thongs and things, sometimes its takes a while if I don't like the look of it - is this that obessive thingy??

So do I netibiza!

I have to hang all the washing in sets too. It makes it so much easier when you're taking them off the line to fold, so it swings & roundabouts on time! (Mind you, I usually give them 5/10 mins in the tumble to soften them up - so p'raps not!).

Glad to see I,m not the only sad person on this planet Love hanging washing out on a nice day with all my colour-co-ordinating pegs but still need black ones can somebody help me PLEASE
Hmmm. I have a tumble drier, which is part of my washing machine, but I swear it just doesn't work! It takes about 40 mins to dry ONE item. I end up drying all my clothes on indoor lines, which makes them extra cardboard-like and scratchy. Anyone know what I am doing wrong?

Scarlett those combi washer/driers just don't do the job I'm afraid.  I would suggest, if you had the room, to invest in a tumble dryer and you would see the difference. You could try bunging your scrunchy dry stuff in there with a sheet or two of bounce for 5 mins or so.  It should be ok to soften them up, then you can shake and fold a lot of it.

Scarlett - So many people I know have bought washer/dryer combi's, only to sell & replace them with separate ones. The tumble dryer part is so inefficient, compared to an independant one.

If you have the space & could afford to do so, I would definitely invest in a separate tumble dryer, (preferably reversair/two settings) you won't regret it!

Good luck.

You obviously don't pay the bills, why use electricity to dry your clothes when the sun will do it for free ?. Use the tumble dryer if the weathers poor.

I've seen my neighbour put washing out in the middle of winter when its freezing outside, which I think is insane.

Flip-it I understand your point and I have a job, just like Mr Sunflower so I have something to do with the bills. However, pegging is not one of my pleasures in life and it is extremely time-consuming, especially if the weather is not cooperating!  My spare kitchen space has a tumble dryer in it.  Lots of people I know have a dishwasher in its place.  I do the washing up and that takes enough of my time up.  Besides I like washing up.  Maybe it's me but pegging is tedious.  Each to their own.
