Laying vinyl sheet in the bathroom

Never done it but seen a workman do it a few years ago and charge ridiculous rates. So i rip the carpet off. clean the area. then what. What is the paper underlay called (like baking paper)?. Does the vinyl go a tiny bit under the skirting??. best way to cut the vinyl around the toilet and the fiddly door frame?? Any tips please. Thanks

When I began to explain this procedure and all it's variables, I soon exceeded the 2,000 character limit.  I've done this procedure numerous times, and it takes some skill, but you can soon acquire that if you have one thing... patience... The above website talks about adhesive. I did not see any adhesive being applied the last time the workman did it. he just put the underlay and the vinyl sheet above it, trimmed the edges neatly and put silicone on the edges.

We have just done ours - but didn't use any kind of underlay.  Just be careful the lino doesn't shrink!!  My husband used the old lino as a guide, which worked well, especially around the tricky bits.  He then put a few "tacks" in (in unobtrusive places) and once we have silicon sealed it (will take a further month knowing my bloke!!) - it's done and looking fine and dandy!  If you don't fancy fighting with a huge roll of lino, you could always try the "tile" lino, but I think the selection is pretty limited on colours etc.  Good luck!

Dom, apologies for not getting back to your sooner.  It appears that the better qualities of vinyl products do not require adhesive.  Lower priced ones do.  Another consideration would be if you intend to replace the material in a few years.   Materials using adhesive can be taken up, buy not without some difficulty.  At any rate... good luck on the project!

We had our bathroom and a separate toilet done, and we were only charged �35 for the labour.  Phone around...

I love doing diy and have laid vinyl in the past but my advice would be to get a specialist in.  It is very difficult to cut the stuff as close as they do.  I laid vinyl in our kitchen and thought I did a reasonable job but you can see how much better it is in the bathroom which was laid by a carpet fitter.  Pay the extra Dom, it's worth it,  I certainly will next time.
