Washing machine life expectancy

How long would you expect to get from a washer. I have an AEG machine which will probably cost about £140 to repair, not sure how long I've had it but a few years, and I'm wondering if it's worth repairing. Looks fine and had no probs with it before.

personally, i wouldn't. Especially if it's definitely going to cost that much to fix.

Agree with Boo, john......£140 can go towards a brand new up-to-date machine that'll mean you only have to put a little bit more money out for it and get peace of mind it'l hopefully last you for years.

With older machines once they start going wrong, and if you havent Kitchen Appliance insurance or Extended warranties on them, they could easily go wrong again after the almost certain 3 month guarantee you'll get for the £140 repair.

If it is less than 5 years old I'd repair it.
If not put it towards a new AEG (at about £500 new)

ive havw a candy 10 years old no sign of rust at all never once gone wrong still working top notch
machines can be 5 /10 years old no prob , its how long they have actually been used , 10 years old ,say used 2hrs a week = 1040 (43 days) so not that old in usage

I swear by Bosch. Our last one lasted 13 years and used most days, sometimes more and nothing ever went wrong. It was Which best buy at the time. Cannot remember why it needed updating but I agree with others that you should get a new updated one. You cant tell, it might last another 10 years if you get it repaired.

My old AEG was 17 years old when we pensioned it off and never had a repair. Replaced with a Miele which has a 10 year warranty and an expected life of over 20 years!

I agree that washing machines can last for a long time but a bit like old cars, once they start going wrong they become a money pit. It's almost as if getting one bit fixed upsets the equilibrium of the rest of the thing. I swear by Bosch too - replaced my old Hoover with a Bosch and it's never become unbalanced, never done that frightening dance across the kitchen floor, and cleans clothes well. Also newer machines are more energy-efficient.

Miele are expensive but ALL their machines are Which? Best Buys - the one I got (W5740) was described by Which? as "the best washing-machine we've ever tested". The 10-year warranty covers everything - call-out, parts and labour.

I used to have an AEG, which lasted for 15 years before I decided it was time for a new one. I went to John Lewis who said that if I wanted a washing machine with German engineering (which is why I had the AEG) then the only company left was Miele (apparently AEG no longer has German engineering).
I must say I am delighted with my Miele, which has 20 years warranty on it and a life expantancy of 25 years (that's how long they guarantee to carry the parts for!).

Another Bosch fan here...had dishwasher and w/machine or 8 years with no probs. W/machine gets used at least once a day with 6 of us here !!!

My Bosch washing machine is the most reliable I have ever had.

Going for a new one!! This one is 7 years old so I don't think it's worth repairing. Miele seem a bit expensive but should last longer or the Bosch sounds a good choice also
