Bugs in compost
Second question from me today!
I keep finding my compost is jumping with little bugs. (not a huge infestation)... but I find them in the compost of houseplants or in post in the garden. They are probably about half the size of a black ant and fly up out of the compost. They're quite easy to catch and squash but are they:
a) doing any harm? b) what are they? c)how do I get rid of them?
If they are harmless then that's fine outside but I don't like them in houseplants indoors.
Thanks Nick

The flies are called sciarid flies or fungus gnats & they don't usually do any harm to strong plants. They are annoying though I agree! Use a good quality potting compost, don't overwater & remove any dead leaves immediately. If you really want to treat them with chemicals apparently you water with permethrin.
