Anyone now why the tap water sometimes (occasionally) smells and tastes so foul? Does the water board sometimes add cleaner which maight taste? What about fluoride (or anything else)? This happens to both my house (40+ years old) and my brother in law's (brand new).

Mine tastes and smells of bleach quite often. Checked with the water board and they said 'it is within acceptable levels and would cause no harm'. I'm not convinced.
Mine tastes and smells really fresh...all the time.
Our tap water is excellent and tastes pure and refreshing all year long. But there is a lot of rain up here in Scotland. ;-(
Taste of tap water varies region to region .
We live in a hard water area and you may as well drink iron filings .It's revolting .
Check out who supplies your water .I think they are obliged by law to tell you what they put in it .
I've never noticed anything at all in our water (very hard and in SE), mind you the dog will go and drink dirty bucket water in the garden over fresh from the tap in his bowl, so maybe he can smell/taste something.
We always filter our water....straight from the tap it smells and tastes disgusting!
Our tap water here in West Yorkshire is fine - have never noticed smell or bad taste! :)
It's the fluoride they put in it.
You can check online to see if the levels are high in your (and your brother in laws) area.
I can't remember the last time I drank tap water. Disgusting stuff!
I am in the yorkshire area too and now and again, especially late at night i can smell what i always presumed was chlorine ( like at the swimming baths).
10% of the UK receives fluoridated water, and that includes Yorkshire.

There are hundreds of different waters in supply in this country- all of them with different chemical analyses. Some waters require long and complicated treatments and others require little more than chlorination before going into supply.
Sorry, flip, but fluoride at 1 mg. per litre does NOT impart a taste to drinking water. A large number of taste complaints are due to problems in the consumers' premises which are often improved by simple means such as running the tap for a short while before using the water.
Don't apologise, ginge. You carry on drinking your fluoridated water... lol
...and your supplying water company (NOT board) is obliged to provide you with a chemical analysis (if requested) and to investigate any complaints you may have regarding water quality - chemical or bacteriological.
flip- my water supply is not fluoridated- but has a small concentration of naturally-occuring fluoride at 0.2 mg. per litre.
