i get a terrific first bloom of flowers on my camelia shrub   but the first lot of blooms go brown i pick them off and there are literally hundreds of buds left some of them very big   these buds never seem to open   is this normal  or am i doing something wrong   the first crop of flowers normally last two weeks

It seems to me that your camillia flowers are going brown because of frost or being caught in the early morning sun which scorches the plants flowers because of the overnight dew.  As for you problem I only know that Camillias produce flowers if they are not caught by severe frost.  Another reason sometimes is bud blast.  This is where the buds drop of and fail to flower because the plant gets to dry during summer. Sometimes a horticultural fleece will help, giving shelter from overnight frost and also eary morning sun.  Good Luck
