Has anyone got any clever ideas for protecting cooker hobs?

I'm looking for some sort of grease or laquer than can be applied to the chrome bits of the hobs that will prevent them going black.

I appreciate grease would just burn but does anyone know of any type of material that would act as a sort of guard?
