Can anyone recommend a really effective but safe bug repellant?

I would like to use a spray or similar to repell bugs/flies (carpet bugs included) since they're now invading my flat. But I have allergies and a four yr old son so I wonder if anybody has any safe recommendations please? Thank you!!

there is a product on the market called SKIN SO SOFT it is not intentionally made to use as abug spray but it really works. here in the colonies good luck

thank you charliep88 - I have heard of that product. Can you really use it as an insect repellant? Or are you winding me up? LOL!!!! I'll give anything a go!!
