I have ordered a few small items online recently (ink cartridges) only to find that Royal Mail has left each one on my front doorstep anfd I find it there when I get home. Granted my doorstep is set back from the road, but I thought that they should retain the parcel and leave a note to collect it from the Post Office if they can't deliver it. What experiences have others had?

Only get mail every other day. Postman never rings bell, just puts a card through the door. Very inconvenient. No car, so walk to bus stop and hope.
Repoted it as lost to the catalogue it was ordered from. I mean it was their delivery guy - or maybe their delivery companys guy - who I considered at fault
glad to hear you got that sorted out. did you tell postie?
[After sleepybyes] - was delivered by Royal Mail van not postie as such so no way to know who it was!
I have ordered ink cartridges and the post man very kindly hid them behind the plant in my porch.
From his memory he delivered them on a Monday.
The only problem was I did not spot them and I complained to Amazon and they sent me 2 more free of charge by recorded mail.
I saw the postman on Saturday morning and he pointed to the original ink cartridges.
He did hide them well but the only problem was he really hid them too well. I have however told him to hide anything like that in the same place in future.

You can arrange to collect items like this at your local Post Office, the only thing is that it will cost you £1.50 per item. If I were you I'd either try and catch the Postman or ring the local delivery office and ask that if you're not home in future to put a card through your door and return to the Delivery Office. That shouldn't cost you, however it would mean a trip to the delivery office, which may be a few miles away.
