Getting rid of blood stain

My wretched cat (whom I love dearly except when he's in killing mode) brought in a dying and very messy blackbird overnight three days ago. By the time I discovered it in the morning it had bled copiusly into the hall carpet. I've tried cold water, Vanish, proprietary carpet cleaners, but although there's been some improvement the stain is still visible. Is there anything else I should try, before I try to buy a small square rug to cover it up? (it's at the bottom of the stairs, so an ordinary-sized rug won't fit).

Thanks Rojash. I'm not sure about the hydrogen peroxide, as it's a coloured carpet, but I'm off to buy some household ammonia and will try the first three steps.
Don't know if this works on blood, but I use white vinegar on drips of dried red wine successfully. Get a few drips of vinegar , absorb up with kitchen towel. Our carpet is pure wool and beige. It works every time.
Don't know about the stain, but could you put a bell on the cat?
Doesn't salt absorb blood? You might have to 'mist' the stain and put down copious amounts of salt to draw the blood out.

Sorry for delay, Alba - I'm sure I typed a response earlier, I must have put it in the wrong place! Yes, Rjash's link suggests trying salt to clear any residue left after the rest of the process is completed.
Apparently Saliva gets out human blood! although you did mention copious amount of blood (that's a lots of spitting!!!)
I thought someone had murdered someone for a minute, but I see it is a cat murder, not a human one.
Biological washing powder dissolved in lukewarm water and then sprayed onto stain and dabbed off. Repeat as necessary.

Many thanks for all the suggestions. I'll try them in the order in which they appeared!(except for the spitting one - though I am old enough to wear purple.... www.inspirationline.com/EZINE/7MAR2005.htm
Also try a stain devil for blood, they are a really good range.
Try bicarb of soda on a wet sponge and believe it or not, I've tried milk on a blood stain very sucessfully.I also have a cat and he came running up the stairs with a dead robin in the mouth. I was upset for days and my cat had a bell on his collar!Good luck with the stain.
Best thing to get out blood is salt and cold water ,however I suspect that the treatments you have already tried have made this a bit of a no go now. Try a stain devil for blood might work.good luck.
