Is there an easy way to take up trousers/hems?

I am just not the domestic type at all and I find it really hard when it comes to sewing - especially taking up trousers and hems - I've tried using a sewing machine but I'm hopeless and it costs quite a bit to get it done professionally so I'm wondering if there is an easier way to do this? Many thanks

Always make sure the hem is not too big.  Never use a sewing machine on a hem unless its denim.  Sew by picking up a very small amount of cloth on the skirt front, and move over to a bigger bit on the hem, continue thus and do not pull too tightly.

Use Wonderweb, tuck it in between the folds and iron it.

Definately get some Wonderweb, Tesco sell it so the other supermarkets probably do.  Dead easy, just lay it on. fold the hem and iron!

I'm with tetherend and sammy on the use of Wundaweb. I have to say that I would never use it to hem a garment that will have to be let down again at a future date. When my youngest started school I thought I was being economical in buying uniform trousers that were too long. I used Wundaweb but it was a nightmare when I came to let the trousers down again. The stuff had dissolved into a sticky brown gunk that no amount of picking at or washing would shift. Otherwise, it's brilliant stuff.

Woolworth's or the haberdashery dept. of department stores sell Wonderweb.  If a hem of mine was only somewhat unravelled when I went to work full-time, I'd get by with a row of small safety pins (on items from the dry cleaners?) in some things which didn't notice!   Narrow trouser bottoms can be done like that if you think you need to alter them again in a short time.

absolutely agree wonderweb is fab would never have a sewing basket without some. i bought mine from woolies and it is reasonably priced too. hope you enjoy being a wonderweb convert.
