Todaay I've noticed some ants in the kitchen, on the work tops and window sills. I just can't see where they're coming from.
Is there amything I can use to kill them or deter them now?
I'll be up the shops in the morning for something.

They can wait until tomorrow.
They don't like cucumber jem, but the best way is to try and find out where they are coming in and stop up the hole. They will take ant powder back to wherever their nest is so that the nest gets destroyed too. Very difficult to find their entrance, they are so small.
Dethlac, its much better than ant powder and you don't have the mess.
I used to put slivers of garlic on the doorstep. It soon stopped them. Same for fruit trees, if you put bits of, or grow garlic around the tree.
If I put slivers of garlic on my doorstep, it would stop 'er indoors coming in.

Hey, now there's an idea!
Hopkirk, your OH isn't a vampire, is she?
To find thir entrance put a spoon of jam out and get up in the middle of the night and you will see a line of ants from the jam to the entrance, block that hole with bath sealant. They will probably find another way in but just keep blocking them
I agree with Starbuck, you need to see how they're getting in. You could put a little bit of jam or syrup where you see them and then watch to see where they take it...that way you can try and block the entrance for now.
I used Rentokil ant killer gel stations to get rid of ants in my kitchen.
oops, I got distracted and missed your post john.
follow the trail to where they are getting in, then buy some dethlac or ant stop from your local hardware/DIY store and spray it outside at the entrance, I normally spray around the bottom of any doors and it keeps them out.
They don't like boiling water!
Nippon ant killer is effective against most ants. It works because the ants carry the poison back to the nest and it kills the queen ant, who is producing all the eggs. You just put a few drops where the ants are running and the ants do ther rest. Other methods kill ants but don't necessarily kill the source of a lot more ants.

Lacquer spray ant killer is effective in forming a barrier to them, which may be the first requirement, but they'll keep coming wherever they can get in. Nippon takes a little time to kill the queen.

Oooo! Thankyou soo much for all your remadies, My OH has been using filler/sealant everywhere because we still can't see where they're coming in from. OH is not willing to go on 'nightwatch' I've done the jam thing but they just swarm over it. OH went up the shops this morning to get some stuff, came home without it (met an old pal & forgot DOH!) Will try 'Dethlac' tomorrow. (sigh!)
