I have heard that to kill tree roots you can drive a nail into its centre and gradually the root will die, has anyone heard of this as well.

Yes, I killed some old shrub roots this way but it has to be a copper nail.

Leylandii stumps need a couple of cuts / drill holes and old used engine oil.
