I don't much care for the rotary ones either, but I've never considered them old fashioned, just the quality solution.
I investigated using a pulley system when my line broke about a year ago but gave it up as, without instructions, it looked too complex to be bothered with. The way I saw it one would need more than one pully to convert the amount of power you needed to pull the line into a longer length of pull instead, with at least one pulley unfixed/loose. But maybe that's my lack of experience. With just the one pulley I do wonder if pulling the line on a single pulley system is really that easier than pushing the line up with a prop.
