I can make fancy dress stuff (using wonder web) but can't take clothes up - anyone know how I can learn (not really got anyone to show me). Tried to buy some school trousers today (not for me, obviously) but they are all too long and if I can't take them up, they are no good to me (want to do it properly so don't want to use the iron on stuff as I don't think it will last very long). Thank you.
Put the trousers on little one and stand him/her on the table (!) yes you need not be be crawling on the floor. Fold the trousers up to the appropraite length and pin them in place.
Take them off and steam press the fold with the iron. This keeps your line and saves you losing it. Then use the iron on stuff to hold the new hem in place but stitch it is too with a little hem stitch.
A hem stitch is quite easy and doesn't show much on the other side. Here's a picture at 5. Hem Stitch
Thank you both, will have a good look tomorrow. I am a bit odd about doing everything 'right' for the kids. Have a new rule, no new school uniform can go upstairs until I have sewn the name tags on (going to need a lot of tags this year). PS- thing 1's school skirt is soooo tiny, bless her.
I agree tambo, I never machine a hem. Sher, make sure you leave a good hem - at least 1.5 ins - you can turn it down again then, as the little 'un grows taller.
Take them to your local Dry Cleaners they will do them, do zips too. yes you'll have to pay but will have em done before school starts again. Will you?
