Stainless steel hob covers

Have recently moved to a flat and have inherited an electric hob with solid plates and ss covers. They all seem to have light brown streaks which I have been unable to remove using proprietary ss cleaning products. It does not seem to be a build up of grease/grime but a discolouration. Does anyone know how I can remove this or would it be better to buy a new set?

buy a new set - they are really cheap if you have a pound shop or poundstretchers near you about £3.
