I want a door putting into my kitchen to give me access to the garage. The wall is plasterboard. This would also require a radiator to be moved. Can anyone give me a rough indication of how many days work this would involve and the cost please. Thanks.

no idea on cost but I had a new french window put in a load bearing wall in half a day, so not long.
Too many variables Ms Slave :o(
I'm sorry that's of no help at all. If I came and looked at it I could assess the job in a moment (as would anyone else with experience.) Otherwise, I'd have to give you a questionnaire a mile long.
Do ask around for recommendations, then have them quote for you.
I'm afraid it's the only way.

The Builder - I would also need a fire door too. I know it's a big ask but I just have no idea on prices whether it's likely to be under 1K or several K. I had a some building work done in my garden a few years back and the quotes ranged from £600 to £6,000. Would it be a job for a carpenter or a builder. I'm a single lady and don't want to be ripped off.
I am surprised that you only have a studwork wall separating your garage from your kitchen.

1. Will the radiator be moved or removed? Can the one you already have be repositioned or will you need to buy a new one? How accessible are the feed pipes to the radiator? Will re-siting the radiator cause any problems because of the direction of the existing feeds?
2. You can price up Firedoors on 'tinterweb - you'll need to consider iron-mongery (hinges, closers, etc) and architraving.

If everything is straightforwards, the plumber should be done in a day.
If everything is straightforwards, the chippy should be done in a couple of days.

But you may want to consider additional costs of 'making good' in your Kitchen (walls and floor) afterwards.
Oh dear, I'm going to regret this ;o) You've twisted my arm..............
Straightforward, with no complications, £500
Applying AF (aggravation factor), £ 1,000 maximum.

It'll cost nothing for a quotation or two. If you do get them, you could always post them on here (preferably with no names), for us to have a look at.

A good handymen could do this, otherwise you'd probably end up with two quotes ...... builder (or carpenter) AND plumber.
That concerned me too Jack ............... a plasterboard "separating" wall.
I bet it's dot and dabbed plasterboard over block work.
Doh ............... yes of course. Why was I thinking studwork?

No wonder you're a Moderator Chuck ;o)

Thanks guys - I'll get some quotes and let you know what they come up with. Incidentally although I say plasterboard .... the two long walls are breeze block but the facing wall (which would be the one knocked through) looked like plasterboard and sounded hollow when I tapped it so it's only my assumption and I could be wrong (probably am).
