I've got a tap in the kitchen thats leaking, do I just turn the water off from under the sink, or do I turn it off at the mains? I think it only needs a washer, but need to turn water off first! please can you help..

My assumption is that the supply tubes are the same in England as in the U.S., in which case only the affected (hot or cold) supply needs to be turned off.  However, if you have a kitchen faucet that is single lever, then both need to be turned off.  Before you begin, be sure to see if you have the correct washer(s).  There are several different types and sizes depending on the make of the faucet.  Good luck...

If there is an inline valve on the pipe then this should be shut off and you can work on the tap okay (local isolation)

Remember that if it is a mixer, you have to shut both hot and cold off.
