Heating Woes :(

It's that time of year again and I'm back with the heating not coming on again :(

I've been testing it to make sure it will come on ok when it gets colder and for a bit of heat in the mornings as I get up really early.

I posted this last year: http://www.theanswerb.../Question1068051.html

I have made sure the dial on the tank is up and that the room thermostat is up (20 degrees at present). The main boiler in the kitchen seems to fire up (the whoomph pilot light thing) and ticks a bit then calms down - no water gurgling like usual. The big tank in the airing cupboard is also humming.

There is a water tank in the loft though I can't get to it (nor would want to!).

I reread the answers on my last question but got a bit lost in all the valves and stuff if anyone could help with a me-proof simple answer?

Heeeeeeeelp!

i feel for you jenna....every year my boiler packs up as well. the landlords are cheap and come to think of it, i haven't tested mine either. thinking of you x
I`m no expert by a long shot but it sounds like something to do with the room thermostat. It`s firing up the boiler ok but giving some kind of incorrect reading which makes the boiler think that the temperature is up to speed when it`s not. Just a thought.
Jenna, my little Mochiata ................... are you getting hot water, but no radiator heat?

Ahhh Builder! :) Yes, hot water but no heat xxx

Thanks lcg, hopefully will find a solution soon! Just as well I don't feel the cold so much. Will email soon, been rubbish recently! x

Thanks 237SJ, will try faffing with the dial.
Often, it's a stuck circulating pump. Become stuck over the summer when it's not in use. Re-reading last year's thread though ........... I see it wasn't that but the thermostat on the front of the immersion cylinder in the cupboard upstairs.
Try the same thing again i.e. turn this stat up and leave it for a while. Last time, it seems that turning this up nudged the (possibly stuck) diverter valve into operation.

Okie doke, will go faff and report back :)
Ok. I'll be back around 9:30.......... shall look in again then :o)

Thank you :) Have faffed (accompanied by inquisitive cat!) and after turning the dial down on the airing cupboard (trying to wedge a curious cat out!) tank then back up again there seemed to be some more gurgling sounds which I hope is more positive.

Still nothing exciting from the main boiler in the kitchen (was stood on a chair and cat followed so took me a while until I could get back down again!) so have switched it off and waiting a little before sticking the heating back on to see if it stays fired up and gurgles and such.

Fingers crossed!
you might try putting the thermostat up a bit, my house is at 22 deg, verified by three thermometers, with no heat on.

The one on the main thermostat? I have one at the bottom of the stairs. Will stick that up too :)
Question Author
Well, thought I had a brainwave moment faffing with the tap under the sink (desperation!) which prompted much gurgling but then that all died down too...arghhhhhhhh!

Woooo, tried it this morning and I have heat :):):) Thank you everyone. On the way to work now but will give it a longer run tonight.
I have a central heating contract with "Eaga". Phone 0845 603 0665. The address is Eaga Insurance Services Ltd. Lawrence House, Bowden Business Village, Market Harborough, Leicestershire LE16 75A
The contract covers labour and replacement of faulty parts free of charge.
When I need help they send an engineer the next day.
I pay £167.88 per year which includes premium, 6% tax, and £49.28 annual service.
They have replaced parts to the value of £400 so far.
Good news Jenna............ sounds like much the same thing as last year. Either pump or diverter valve becomes stuck over the summer. Leaving it on seems to give it time to sort itself out :o)))
