Washing Machine Clunking Noise.

A few nights ago our washing machine started making a clunking noise. It sounds like something solid is in the drum and knocking about as it spins. We stopped it and checked and there was nothing in there that shouldn't be.However it is still making the noise and it is much worse the faster that it spins. What so you think could be causing this to happen?

Could be something between the drum and the rest of it. If you are lucky then after a high spin it may make it's way to the filter where you might be able to fish whatever it is, out.

Failing that it could be something more expensive. If you can't get it from the filter in the next few uses then best call someone out.

A worn main bearing or one of the springs to the weights that hold the drum central has come detached.

Taking the top off and checking the springs and reattaching them if necessary is easy (even for a blonde girl)......main bearing is well out of my league :-)

With the door open, check the internal outlets ( The small holes within the barrel ) there may be something that's got into one of the holes & catching on the spin. other than that, the load inside is uneven.

Could be the drum hitting the inner rubber seal(had this problem last week) when the drum is empty slowly turn it by hand and see if it is catching if so,where it is hitting the seal just bend the drum,away from that area slightly ,worked for us.

We had a similar problem and it turnerd out to be an imbalnced washing m/c which weakened the springs which put it into kilter and the bearings suffered and had to be replaced. If you go down the road of replacing bearings get a cost first. Our engineer charged about £40 per 1/4 of an hour and the job will take at least 2 hours. Might be worth looking at a new model.

If its not too late and no damage has been caused adjust the two front wheels so that its sits evenly on the floor.

Our machine did the same a few months ago. The cause was the lower ballast weight came loose. This in turn makes the drum spin out of centre causing noise and vibration.
This sounds like a banging noise.

The other possible cause is the drum bearing. To check this open the door and try to lift the drum by the top edge. If it has any play in it, your fault is the bearings.
This would make a noise like a loud whirring when in the spin cycle.

Check all your bras for a missing underwire.

When ours made terrible noises and lurched a bit, a wire was stuck through hole in the drum and fouled the mechanism.

As methyl shows the centriful force of a high speed rotating drum is immense. A visible daily occurrence is the shattered tyres on motorways where a lorry has had a blowout and the tyre is shattered.

Without sounding pikie PDJ, HGV Trailer Tye's blow out because they are cheap cr@p, they used to be called " Bandag Specials" Cheap tyres, over 60 at the time HGVs were allowed to do that.

Took the thing out and have the innards a wee shake about and that sorted it.
