My window is 60 ft above ground, it is at least 90 ft from the nearest tree or shrub but there are aphids on my plants. My question is how could they have got there?

They will have flown. As far as I can remember there will be one hatching of winged aphids and the next one will be wingless, alternating through the summer.

thanks

That explains it.The present brood is wingless.

Definitely flew in (unless the eggs were already there) - but if you would like a simple way to deter them then put a clove of garlic onto the surface in each pot or small, tight group of pots (renew occasionally as it dries out).
