Limestone Floor Tiles.

The house we bought last year has fitted floor tiles. They are large, about 1metre by .5 metre and from the crates in the garden appear to come from India. The trouble is they appear to be made of some sort of limestone and although attractive, in places of heavy wear they are beginning to break up. Small pieces about the size of 1p come out and leave an area that gets and looks dirty. Could I clean them with a steam cleaner ~ would it do any harm; should we fill in and seal the missing parts; and if so what do we use? I would like to catch them early.

The areas that have started to erode away will continue to break up if they are left exposed, so some kind of filler would delay this. From what you have described I don't think filling will prevent the problem full stop - it seems the mechanical performance of the rock doesn't do well under the kind of traffic it has been getting.
I think that steam cleaning might just add to the possibility of holes getting bigger.
But it's difficult to say much more without seeing the actual rocks and damage - maybe you could post a few images?

I also have a ridiculous washbasin in the bathroom which looks as if it's made of volcanic lava and it leaks badly. It cannot be made for like that, I'm sure it needs treating.
