garden fence erection

i am in the process of erecting a new garden fence, running between my garden and my neighbours, both parties in agreement. However following the erection of three panels my neighbour has said they will have to come down as the supports are facing her garden and not mine, quoting this is law! After spending over two hundred pounds on materials and labour am I out of order putting the "nicer" side facing my garden?

There is no law which side the supports should go, it is just generally the 'done thing' to put the nice side on your neighbours side. I know this sounds ridiculous when you are the one paying for it. In our garden when we did our fence we gave the neighbours the nice side and then when the neighbours on the other side did their fence, they unfortunately gave us the wrong side as well, so we have got both fences with the supports facing in but to be honest it really doesn't bother me as most of it is covered with plants anyway

I was once told by a builder that you have to put the nice side facing the neighbours. But recently my next door neighbour did theirs they gave me the wrong side, it doesnt matter to me because I am not paying and its a new fence. Anyway who pays for which side of the fencing? Should your neighbour pay half?

I've always understood that the post and cross rails of the fence should be on the erector's side for the simple reason that one is in the better position to upkeep and repair same.

I don't know if this makes any difference, but when we bought our house from the previous owners, they had bought it from the council a few years before ie. it is an ex-council house and so are the houses either side.

 

Obviously, the fences, as well as the houses, come/came under the council's responsibility to build/erect.

 

The fence on the side that is our neighbour's (still a council tennant) responsibility is nice side to them and the fence that is ours is nice side to us.

 

I'm not saying the council are perfect (lol) but I would assume that they wouldn't ordinarily go round putting up fences which would bring on neighbourly disputes!
