Is there any sort of rule of thumb on how much paint you need based on the size of the wall?

starter here, depends on the make/ type of paint but the manufacturer should give you a guide, it's often on the tin

http://www.dulux.com.au/products/paint-calculator
http://www.tesco.com/direct/help/paint-calculator.page A good quality paint (eg Dulux)will cover better than say Wilko own brand etc
Question Author
Thanks Humber! The pain I want is Dulux, which helps.
Could not agree more with Mickrog - life's too short for cheap paint.
Question Author
Thanks Mick, that link helps a little more as I'm not doing whole rooms, just a few walls.
handy tip is to store the tin turned upside down for a day before you open it evian, it makes stirring it a lot easier
Question Author
Sorry, being thick. Can someone help.

In the tesco link I put one wall as 300cm w x 240 cm H and another wall as 150 cm wide and 240 cm high.

But it puts a 1 in the box for 2.5l and 5l tins. I assume this just means I need one or the other?
in general, and in old money, and with all the caveats about type of paint etc, a gallon of paint does about 350 square feet
Question Author
Then if I have my calculations right, (which I probably haven't) a 2.5 litre tin could do it.

Thanks again!
Are you going to be using a brush or a roller Evian, I find that if I use a roller I tend to use more paint.
Question Author
I'm going to use a roller mostly.

I just wanted to try and be specific because Dulux paints are 3 for 2 at the moment and I need two different colours (one colour is for a room not factored into the above sums) so it would save me a few quid if I knew I was going to need a total of three tins but I don't want to end up with a spare tin of pain I have no use for.
A lot of places will give you a refund on an unopened can of paint.
Question Author
But it'll on be on a 3 for 2 offer so I'd have to return all 3 tins to get a refund.
Ah right Evian.
agree with tony evian, you do use a bit more with a roller but you get much better coverage and a far, far better finish

I've painted thousands of square feet on the barge, the best bet is to use a two inch roller - not the big ones - the paint goes on much quicker and you don't get a knackered arm
Question Author
Ah great, as you can probably tell I'm not exactly a pro. I was wondering about rollers and so on but didn't want to ask more silly questions. 2 inch roller it is :)
what sort of paint is it - emulsion, eggshell?
Question Author
It's a matt emulsion.
And more importantly, what colour/s?
