Can anyone explain why kitchen base units have a gap at the back? It seems a bit odd to me.

Thanks Chelle - so presumably if I don't have any need for accessing behind the units, then I could make a nice tidy finish that will keep out the spiders?
If your walls are not true it is for easier fitting also.
Ikea kitchen units have no space at the back - a source of frustration with UK fitters. Seems plumbing and electrical services must run at floor level in Sweden!
