First, here the laundry detergent company "Tide" has just begun marketing a packet that one uses maybe once a month with no clothes in the washer to remove intransigent bacteria that grow in the machine and especially on the rather large rubber gasket that seals the door. Seems to work pretty well.
Additionally, gently pull up on the backside of the aforementioned gasket and spray the adjacent area with vinegar or bleach... the area seems to collect the bad bacteria.
Finally, don't close the door tightly when not in use. Letting air circulate in the machine seems to help. The above advice to use a 'hot' water setting once in a while is sound as well...

I use liquid in a ball inside the drum, I never use the drawer now after similar occurrence. Occasionally I put some domestos in drum on its own and run a boil cycle followed by a couple of rinse cycles. It gives the pipes a good clear out. Warning: do not use too much domestos due to loads of bubbles.
