I know this will seem like a silly question, but if you buy artificial flowers, can you cut the stems to fit a vase/container?

Quite often, yes. They might be wire covered in plastic or just plastic, but you should be able to trim them. Don't use your good tools, rather, use something from the shed. If they don't cut, perhaps you can bend them!

Yes of course you can, but as rampart suggests, just use some old scissors - or if they're thick wires, nick one of hubby's tools from the garage!
I would use a pair of side cutters to snip the wired stalks - it's so much easier!
you will still have to water them or they will die!!!!!!
