The reason why is because the leaves at the bottom often get dry and turn brown due to extreme weather conditions. Clematis like early morning sunlight and also like to have their root systems kept moist and cool, which is accomplished with generous organic matter mulching. As long as your vine still has green leaves then don�t worry about it too much. What I suggest you do is plant something in front of the Clematis to hide the �ugly feet�.
Eternity has good advice, but may I add that if you will persistently deadhead spent blooms you can encourage additional blooms later in the season. You also need to know in which varietal your clematis originated since the pruning requirements are different for each. There are three varieties, A, B, and C (clever, no?). Each needs to be pruned at different times of the year to assure health in the plant for the next season. Good luck...
