Hi all, can you help?  Is it true that the best side of a fence has to face your neighbour, and what do you do about it if its already up?

If you are paying to have the fence erected, then you can put it whatever way round you prefer, it is common practice to put the best side towards yourself. If it already up, and it is on your property, then I dont think you are obliged to do anything about it.
A few years ago my neighbour who rents her property  had a fence put up by the council and the fence posts had to go her side of of the property boundary which meant I got the best side. I would imagine as long as the posts are within the fence owners boundary line and not on your neighbours land, you could have it either way.

My dad was a landscape gardener for a few years and he always told me that if you wanted to put a fence between you and your neighbours garden you have to have the 'ugly' side. I suppose its the arguement that it was your idea to have put the fence up so you can have the ugly side. If its already up i wouldnt think you would have to change it as they were probably there when it was erected and never disagreed with having that side

It is traditional to give your neighbour the best side, but there is no law to state this, just tradition and courtesy. You can have the best side yourself if you wish, and there's nothing your neoghbour can do about it.
