Do You Ask

People to remove their shoes when they come into your home? I don't but was thinking about what we actually tread in when walking out and about and perish the thought! :(

My wife and I don't ask anyone to remove their shoes when they come into our house, but we do it when we visit friends, and they do it (without being asked) when they visit us. It seems to be a custom that just happened, so we go along with it. Our previous houses had doormats, so shoes were wiped, but many of the modern ones don't have doormats, so maybe that's where the custom came from.

I don't actually ask them but they do it anyway, as I would do at their houses.

no I don't expect people to remove their shoes and I certainly wouldn't ask, I have got two dogs and they and I are in and out of the house to the garden all the time.
I have a friend who doesn't have pets and has pale cream carpets, she would never dream of asking but I always do.

No but most people do if they go into the living room. I spend most of my time in the kitchen and if we get visitors we usually end up in there round the kitchen table.

If I asked a visitor to remove their shoes before entering our house, I think that would create a bit of an 'atmosphere', which would spoil the visit.

I'm always embarrassed when people removed their shoes when entering my home.

I'd much rather they kept them on as I don't want their smelly feet and holey socks on show!

I wouldn't dream of asking anyone to remove their shoes when visiting. I have been asked to removed my shoes when visiting other peoples houses, but have always felt slightly uncomfortable and worried about spilling a drop of drink or something as they are obviously very house proud. I care more about my friends than my furniture!

I don't ask people to remove their shoes when they come into our house, but once they come into the hall way and see the polar bear coloured carpets in the adjoining rooms they remove their shoes anyway.

Only bedrooms and corridor are carpetted in my house so no, I'd never want anyone to take their shoes off; I'd be liable if they slipped and if they were bare footed would have to get the floorcloth out! I remember being greeted with these thin slipper things when walking on wooden floorboards in flats years ago.
