Paint on Plaster
6 Answers
We have recently had our ceilings smoothed by a plasterer and I would like to know what paint I am to use as an undercoat.

If you intend to have an oil based finish in, say, matt or eggshell, then I would recommend an oil based plaster primer - after allowing the plaster to dry out for a week or two. If, as is more likely for ceilings, you wish to finish in emulsion paint then first apply a coat of emulsion thinned with an equal measure of cold water to act as a sealer ( reduces suction/absorbtion) followed by two or three coats of your chosen emulsion finish.or you can buy a special plaster sealer which makes following coatings easier to apply less like trying to paint a sponge ! Good luck.
Definitely seal the plaster before painting it.
If you paint directly onto the ceiling then you will use twice as much paint. Undercoats are fine, but the best sealant would be to use wallpaper paste with twice as much water added than recommended. Paint straight onto the plaster and allow to dry fully before painting with emulsion.
