Tiling

I need to tile a small area (just under a metre squared) and was wondering if anybody has any good tips...or an idiots guide?

work from the middle outwards to achieve an even portion of tile to each edge, unless near to a kicker board that can disguise extra tile showing

Most DIY stores have "how to" leaflets on tiling so don't worry, it's quite easy as long as you follow one of these.

get self spacing tiles, you don't want to be messing about with matchsticks. if the area can be extended to exacly 1m2 then you will be able to buy exactly the right number of tiles and won't need to cut them. Also, you can then start at one end and work across, saving you the bother of starting in the middle (assuming the wall is true of course)

Make a marked measuring stick (piece of timber with pecil or other mark for every tile width (allow for  one gap each mark. Do the same on the other side of the stick for the height (if not the same). You can use this to plan your set-up and find the right locations for any pattern tiles etc.

If you're going to have no cut tiles then the starting point is to create two batons (one vertical and one horizontal) tack to surface being tiled meeting at the left hand bottom corner of your design.

If you will be cutting tiles then tack your batons at the lowest full row and column. Complete the field tiles, using spacers or card between the tiles, until you have completed the placing of whole tiles. Remove the batons and cut tiles to fit the spaces left.

Grout and wipe clean.
