I have two light fittings (approx.32" long)in my kitchen with 4 50W halogen bulbs on each. These are very expensive to run. Was thinking of replacing these with 2 x double tube fluorescent tubes 4 Ft. long with 50W tubes if this is possible. Would I still get as much brightness and would it be more economical. Any input would be much appreciated.

I think you're talking about track lights. If so, just replace the lamps with WARM White LEDs. Make sure they're at least 7w each. You will be reducing 400w to 56w. They cost a few quid each but last for years (50,000 hours with latest ones).
Unplug the halogens, throw them away, and fit LEDs as Zacman has said.
Brightness is usually given in Lumens. I've fitted lots of 4W LEDs (320 Lumens). Roughly equivalent to a 50W halogen.

It's a matter of personal taste as to how bright you want them. You may well want 6W or more.

Do a bit of research here, Jammy...............

Thank you both, you have given me food for thought, did not know that you could get LED bulbs to fit the "halogen" sockets. Brilliant.
Yep GU10s.
I replaced my 50w GU10's in the bathroom with warm white LED's and they give off a super light for a fraction of the cost
