Plastic Washing Up Bowl In The Kitchen Sink, Or Not?

Personally I don't - I always thought the purpose of a plastic bowl was to cushion impact and make a useable washing space in the big old-fashioned slop stone sinks of yesteryear.
So I'd be interested to see what Ab-ers do - plastic washing up bowl, or none? And why?

none. I have got one that I use for washing my fragile china and glass ornaments and I fold a teatowel and put it in the bottom for extra safety. Other than that I have a dishwasher or use the stainless steel sink.

Bowl, because there always seems to be a couple of items with dregs of gravy,tea,coffee or juice - so have room at the side to pour those away.

Plastic washing up bowls do more harm than good especially in glazed china sinks. small abrasive particles get embeddedd in the base and abrade the glaze on the bootom of the sink, usually forming a ring of scratches.

Good point Mamy - but I put the real washing up in the dishwasher. If 'caught short' the downstairs bathroom is just a step away. Old hotpot is incredibly flushable.

Jo - fascinating - never considered that but it makes absolute sense when described.

Saves me walking to the loo, no dishwasher and haven't had a china sink since I lived with my Grandmother.

Well it does yes but only after a hefty hit of Hydrochloride Acid thanks to us.

I have a stainless steel sink, I don't have a plastic bowl. I am just careful with glass and china.

We have a plastic washing up bowl in our kitchen,
It's on a rubber mat in the corner for the dogs to drink from,
Dog bowls are too small.

I've read through Slinky Kate's cabbage soup thread.....now I'm not daft enough to put particles bigger than .... what comes naturally ..... down the loo. But it is certainly a very convenient route for certain types of kitchen waste. And that's apparently illegal!
Well Dennis Nielsen got away with it for years.

When most people had stone sinks, they did not have plastic. The bowls were enamel, and everyone had an enamel bowl inside the stone sink. But enamel did not do much to protect fragile items - servants cleaning fragile items would line the bowl or sink with several layers of chamois, known as "shammy"

No bowl, mainly because I have a huge ceramic sink and can't get a bowl big enough. Have a metal sink saver tray in the bottom to stop pots marking the sink and to stop plates from chipping.

Bowl stays in cupboard under the sink-only use it for washing dishes

Stainless steel sink and no bowl. I have big pans, wok etc that wouldn't fit into a plastic bowl.

Same as Quinie. I hand wash as we simply do not have room for a dishwasher. I can't bear the bowl left in the sink, so it gets used, cleaned, then tucked away .

Bowl, constantly left in sink. Poor old dishwasher consigned to garage as no room for it in this house.
