potassium nitrate (saltpeter) is available from garden centres. You can also get it from pharmacists or from chemical suppliers (Lancaster Synthesis, for example...they are on the web.) Or if you want to be old fashioned, dig in the middle of two year old dung heaps...the crystals you find will be it.
