I have a rug which has some dirty marks on it. What is the best way to remove these without having it professionally cleaned? They have been there a long time and I'm sure I have tried in the past with little success. Anything I could try before getting the professionals in? It is deep pile. Thanks

Try hiring one of those rugmasters from the supermarket, with an upholstery attachment, and use the upholstery attachment on it.
Check the label and see if it can be washed. Most rugs can - although if you wash one that can't, the backing will fall apart. Hand wash it in warm water with normal detergent. If the stains show no signs of shifting, try a stain remover like Vanish.
Damp baking soda gently rubbed into stains is very effective. Leave for an hour or so and then Hoover up.
