Apart from humans, do snails & slugs have any natural effective enemies in the UK ?

While beer or lager is an effective way to kill slugs or snails by them drinking it and falling in, bear in mind that hedgehogs love beer too. They tend to get drunk, wander off, and get run over on the roads. Don't just use a saucer. Any beer-trap should be made hedgehog proof.
