new home :O)

I may be moving into my 1st new home in the next few weeks (maybe months) and was wondering if anybody had any helpful tips or things to help me regarding the actual moving day and pre-move? Maybe from personal experience, just those little things that you always forget. I've heard it can be fairly stressful and would like things to go as smooth as possible.

Will you have loads of stuff to move, and are you using a professional removal firm or doing it yourself?  Either way start collecting boxes and packing materials asap and start packing as soon as you know you are going - in my experience it always takes much longer than you think it will and you don't want your last hours to be spent frantically jumbling things into bin bags.  I ususally write on the boxes too so I know roughly what's in there when I arrive in the new place.

OK you've got yourself an expert here lol. I've been on my own since I was 14 and my 9 year old son has lived in 16 different houses.  first thing, you have to make sure that you pack a kettle and tea/coffeee stuff in one box and know where it is.  Dont put too much stuff in a box, sort out your electrity and stuff the day before, label everything with the room it's going into, have more helpers than you think you will need. If you have furniture that needs dismantled/rebuilt keep all the screwdriver and screws,nuts bolts etc in 1 bag. will be back if I think of anything else, it's really not stressfull if you dont let it be.

Excellent advice mycatis - just wanted to add that when u dismantle all the furniture etc and put all the neccesary bits into a bag, then sellotape the bag onto a bit of the corresponding furniture. i have found this to be an uber top tip.

Try to ingratiate yourselves with your new neighbours immediately, as they may be of great help in the near future. Also, try to shame them into bringing you lots of home-baking in true 1930's America style.

When we moved last year I said to the removal men as soon as they arrived "Tell us when you want a cup of tea". With one accord they all shouted "Yes please".

Proffessional removal men will drink a vast amount so have plenty of tea, coffee and soft drinks avaliable. Pack these things last and open them first at the new house.

The last time I moved, I prepared a box and labelled it DAY ONE BOX and, in addition to all the tea/coffee making stuff, I put in things like loo roll, soap, towel, lightbulbs, basic tools (screwdrivers, pliers, hammer etc), cleaning materials etc so that all the basic stuff was to hand in one box.

You may also want to include your phone charger and make sure you have any important numbers in your phone like solicitor, estate agent etc in case any last minute hitches need sorted out!

Also, start making a list of all the organisations that you will have to inform about change of address (credit card company, bank etc etc) and get a letter off to them as soon as you know the date you will be moving and then that's another job done!
