Houses By Busy Roads

have you ever had trouble selling a house because it's next to a busy main road? would you avoid buying a house by a busy main road? mate of mine has seen a lovely one he likes, but is not sure if the busy main road will make it hard to sell or let?

Depends on what your priorities are. I would avoid because I'd worry about my cats and can't stand road noise, especially at night.
Some might worry because they have young children, or dogs or even have concerns about increased pollutants.

It would put me off and is always something I take into consideration when looking at houses.

We have two new housing projects not far from where we live, a plot of three houses have been squashed onto the end of one of the main housing estates, the houses are just yards from the public footpath on a busy main road. I understand these have been bought up by the Council to rent out. Further along the other houses (6) are the same but are slightly raised and have front gardens, but still about six feet from the main road. Council bought again.

Most London properties are surrounded by busy roads, occupants get used to traffic drone & pay premiums.

It depends what the options for the same price are in the area. If there are many such houses and not many in quiet roads and if the price is comparable to other similar houses, then fine, if not then not. I have to say that I have only ever bought houses to live in and resale value is way down my list of priorities. The buy to let market is different, again local research is the answer.research

I would prefer not to live next to a busy road. I do buy a house to live in, but I would have to really like it though, if it was next to a noisy road.

Like AYG all the new houses round me built straight onto busy roads are for council/housing association occupants, probably because they are just grateful of somewhere to live. If you like city living then it's not going to bother you.

If you ever want to keep a cat the answer is a definite NO my daughter lives on a main road and as had 2 cats killed because of where she lives and our local cats protection league refuse to let her rehouse any because of the main road. I personally would not like to live by a main road but I do know that after a very short while one can get used to noise so that eventually it is not noticed, When I was first married over 50 years ago my first house was by a church that had a clock that chimed every 15 minutes I thought I would never get used to it but I did and very soon I never noticed it unless someone brought up the subject. I do think that living close to a main road does effect its selling effects but having said that if someone wants a property badly enough they will buy it no matter where it is.

Our first house was on a main road, buses going passed made the house shake! We bought it because it was pre-children days and it was what we could afford. When our first son was born, we moved to a bigger place in a quiet street. Our cat was also killed by traffic. Having said that, we had no problem selling it.

Houses on main roads are generally cheaper on a like for like basis to one on a quiet road. Chances are you will get a 'better' house for the same money. Depend what your priorities are.
