I have been trying to find some sort of metal rods/spikes to put around my pond that I can attach wire or nylon line to for deterring herons. Any ideas, please? I have looked online for pond supplies etc but no luck.
It took some time to find out that what the USA call "Fencing Pins" are "Fencing Stakes in the UK and come up with B&Q. http://search.diy.com/search#w=fencing%20stake&asug= Herons do not like Fishing Line in a knotted cross-hatch matrix across the entire area of the pond plus a yard. Herons are vemin imho.
Try a camping shop for steel tent pegs. I bought some recently for fastening down a plant support in the garden. They're about 8" or so long, bent over at one end, and they might just do.
My neighbour has a very large, deep pond and has tried everything. He currently has stakes all around and a big net over the pond itself but they still seem to get the odd one or two. We do have a heronry nearby, though, so they take risks when there are chicks to be fed
