Stained Floor Help Needed

Hello all, my cat is suffering from kidney failure and now his bladder is out of control poor thing. He just goes at any point in any place. I have coverings on the sofa and chairs and in his basket but he also tends to go on the floor when he's having a bad moment. The problem is my wooden floor is now stained. I mop it up as soon as it happens or when I see it but the stains stay. Does anyone have any ideas what I can use to clean it up properly? TIA

You could try white vinegar or lemon juice.

Poor cat, it must be so difficult for both of you. Horrible when they get old and poorly.

Thanks I'll give that a try. Need something that has a strong smell to mask the aroma of cat urine too

He's been suffering for a while, but all of a sudden its got a lot worse. He's got medicines, drips etc. He's nearly 14 and if a cat has 9 lives he must have had at least 100 by now. He's a fighter the old boy

Bicarbonate of soda is good for neutralising smells. Sprinkle it on, then pour vinegar and water on top. It will probably fizz a bit, but should hopefully help.

Don't use any kind of pine scented disinfectant as the smell can encourage further weeing.

Poor kitty. I had a similar problem on a wood floor but found that the surface had been eaten into and had to re sand and polish the floor to get rid of the marks.

I believe Borax powder is a good neutraliser for urine smells (it is a great general cleaning product), you can by it online (from an auction site!) for £5.95 inc P&P for a 2kg box. Get well soon Puss :-)

Poor fellow - our Rover has partial kidney failure but his medication is keeping it in control at the moment. I don't know what to suggest to help your floor problem...

Thanks all. I've noticed that in one area the the floor protector has rubbed off and he's been there :-(

Tell me what works - Rover vomited onto an old polished wooden stool, and the acid in the vomit took off all the patina...

(I've used loads of that stuff over the years. As you'll see from the links to the right of that page, other sizes are available).

However, while that product can be used on any surfaces, I note that there's also a version specifically for use on hard floors. (I've not used it myself but, given the proven efficacy of the 'general use' version, I would expect it to provide excellent results):

Filbert.. we had a urine problem when our boy had cystitis recently... I dunno how your going to reinstate your lovely wood flooring.. but I was told to put a capfull of surgical spirit into a bowl of water 'til it goes milky looking.. to get rid of smells.. well it worked.. stopped the smell and put our boy off wee-ing there again.. but be carefull with it your wooden floors!! :- / Mrs C x
